We conclude with The Shirelles, an American girl group formed in 1958, the first Afro-American girl group to have a number one single on the Billboard Hot 100. They had a huge musical and racial impact on both sides of the pond. The Beatles were large admirers, according to George Harrison, "We always loved those American girl groups, like the Shirelles and the Ronettes, so yeah we developed our harmonies from trying to come up with an English, male version of their vocal feel." The Beatles recorded covers of these two songs for their debut LP Please Please Me (Parlophone 1963). First, Boys (which Ringo sang) the B-side to single Will You Love Me Tomorrow (Scepter (sic)7" 1960), then Baby It’s You (Scepter (sic) 7" 1961). Until next week ...
