Music Box 23rd August 2025

We start with Brass Buttons, a US garage rock band from Rochester in late 1960s. This is B-side Hell Will Take Care Of Her, from their sole release, single My Song (Cotillion 7" 1968).
Next up, one of my favourite bands whom I was lucky to see live in their 80s heyday, Australia's finest The Go-Betweens, with Boundary Rider, from their ninth studio LP Oceans Apart (Lo-Max 2005)
gushes is a New York artist, and this is track Yo banana boY (self-released digital 2025), which will be re-released in October on her LP Delicious Collision.  Buy here
Now for Rhode Island legends Throwing Muses with brand new release Albatross, from their twelfth studio LP Moonlight Concessions (Fire 2025). One of the genius things about songwriter Kristin Hersh is her ability to change song structures as here at 01:54. Love the coda, "I know you aren't asking to thrive/Just survive/Just survive/That bird should've been able to fly/That bird should've been able to fly/That bird should've been able to fly/Or survive/I'm just trying to keep us alive". I love her and the band.  Buy here
As promised last week, we conclude with a brace from Icelandic legends Sigur Rós. A double-bill ofHljómalind (“a fountain of music”), from their fourth LP Hvarf – Heim (“Gone- home”) (EMI/XL 2007) and  Góðan daginn (“Good morning”), from their fifth LP LP Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust (“With a ringing in our ears we play endlessly”) (EMI/XL 2008). Both are brilliant. Until next week ...
