Kalima were a UK funk, Latin and jazz style band, formed in 1983 from the ashes of 1980s band Swamp Children, including, at one time or another, all but one member of Factory label mates A Certain Ratio. This is the official video for their brilliant cover of The Smiling Hour (Factory 12" 1984, cat no. FAC87)
Next up, country and western and rockabilly legend, and rock'n' roll pioneer Carl Perkins, with Honey Don't, the B-side of Blue Suede Shoes (Sun 7" 1956). composer Perkins himself. It reached No.2 in the U.S., though the A-side was more famously recorded later that year by Elvis.
The Rooks (website) were a 1960s garage rock band from Chicago, Illinois who released three singles. Turquoise was the B-side of their second, Ice And Fire (Jo-Way 7" 1967)
Next up, my favourite modern band, Baltimore Maryland's finest Wye Oak (though Jenn now lives in Durham North Carolina and Andy in Marfa Texas). This is my video for their superb track Join, from their brilliant sixth LP The Louder I Call, the Faster It Runs (Merge 2018)
We conclude with Pink Floyd and a double-bill of their first two singles, the Official Music Videos of Arnold Layne (EMI 7” 1967), and See Emily Play (EMI 7” 1967) when Syd Barrett was still in the group. Fantastic. Until next week …
