Focus were a Dutch rock group centered around flutist and vocalist Thijs Van Leer and guitarist Jan Akkerman in their original incarnation (1969-1976). The music is influenced by classical music, as heard in their signature song, the baroque style inspired "Hocus Pocus". The majority of their work is instrumental, like their biggest hit, Sylvia (Polydor 7" 1972), from their third LP Focus 3 (Polydor 1972)
Girlpool is an indie rock/pop duo from Los Angeles, California, USA, formed in 2013. In August 2022, the duo announced that they will be taking an indefinite break from the band. Here's the fantastic Pretty, from their third LP What Chaos Is Imaginary (Anti 2019)
Next up, an all-time classic from The Turtles, an American psychedelic folk/rock band with pop sensibilities. Formed in 1965, they broke up in 1971. This is Happy Together (White Whale 7" 1967), from their third LP Happy Together (White Whale 1967)
)
The Yardbirds next, and For Your Love (Columbia 7" 1965)
We conclude with a brace from Hampshire UK band The Clientele, both fantastic. First, I Can't Seem To Make You Mine, from their third album Strange Geometry (Pointy/Merge 2005), then the official video for The Neighbour, from their LP Music For The Age Of Miracles (Merge 2017). Both brilliant songs from a sadly underrated band. Until next week ...
