We start with 80s ska-influenced new wave band The  Beat, and the official video for their excellent single Save It For Later (Go-Feet 7"/12" 1982), from their third album Special Beat Service (Go-Feet 1982)

Howard Devoto was the leader of two Mancunian punk legends, Buzzcocks in 1977, and Magazine from 1978. Before forming his third and final band Luxuria, he had a brief solo career. This is the official video for his debut solo single Rainy Season (Virgin 7"/12" 1983), from his album Jerky Versions Of The Dream (Virgin 1983)

Peter Gabriel needs no introduction, but many people may not be familiar with the experimental unsettling classic that is his third LP Peter Gabriel 3 (aka Melt) (Charisma 1980). From it here's the second single No Self Control (Charisma 7" 1980), the follow-up to his international hit Games Without Frontiers.

1980 was one of the greatest years in modern music. Joining Joy Division, Talking Heads, The Fall, Echo & The Bunnymen, Peter Gabriel, OMD etc came young Glasgow indie label Postcard records, and they released Edinburgh band Josef K's second single Radio Drill Time (Postcard 7" 1980 cat no. 80-3). Brilliant.

 

We conclude with another Edinburgh legend, vocalist  Shirley Manson. After a decade with group Goodbye Mr. MacKenzie, who released four albums, and before she joined Garbage, she released a solo album Angelfish (Radioactive 1994) under that moniker.
