Music Box 19th September 2026

We start with the Burt Bacharach and Hal David classic - This Guy's In Love With You, first performed in the final version here by Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass (A&M 7" 1968), reaching no.1 in U.S., Canada, and Australia (no.3 in the U.K.). Also featured on their tenth LP The Beat of the Brass (A&M 1968)
Atlantes - Quick To Forget, a DIY Home recorded track by Canberra Australia quartet in 2012. They  released one more E.P. then disappeared. I love vocalist Hannah Veikkanen's individual style. Buy here.
Another classic from 1968 written by another legendary songwriter, Jimmy Webb, Glen Campbell's version of Wichita Lineman (Capitol 7" 1968), also featured on his eleventh studio album Wichita Lineman (Capitol 1968)
Carole King and Gerry Goffin wrote for The Crystals their single  He Hit Me (And It Felt Like A Kiss) (Philles 7" 1962) after discovering that their babysitter and singer "Little Eva" Boyd was being regularly beaten by her boyfriend. When they inquired why she tolerated such treatment, Eva replied, with complete sincerity, that her boyfriend's actions were motivated by his love for her. Controversial then as now, but I don't think it glorifies domestic abuse, rather it's a chilling insight into victim's self justifications, and the power a man can have over a woman, which psychologically demonstrates why the victims put up with unacceptable behaviour
We conclude with Corey Cunningham 's project Business of Dreams, and a brilliant double-bill from his second LP Ripe For Anarchy (Slumberland 2019). First, the official video for the title track, then the haunting Don't Let Our Time Expire. Brilliant. Until next week ...
