The Bluethings were a garage/folk band formed in 1964 in Hays, Kansas. Originally called The Blueboys, they changed their name to The Blue Things in 1965 to avoid confusion and potential legal issues with the late Jim Reeves' backing group of the same name and relocated to Lawrence, Kansas shortly thereafter. In 1968, they split with their management, who owned the rights to their name, and began performing as Fyre. This is unreleased track Waiting for Changes.
The JuJus were a Grand Rapids, Michigan garage rock group active in the mid-1960s. This is I'm Really Sorry, B-side of their second and last single Do You Understand Me (United 7" 1966)
The Rolling Stones need no introduction, and here’s the atmospheric Moonlight Mile, from Sticky Fingers (Rolling Stones 1971)
Philippe Sarde is a French film composer, and here’s the excellent Hôtel Des Amériques Suite, from the 1981 French film of the same name, directed by 'André Téchiné and starring the stunning Catherine Deneuve. It can be found on Le Cinéma D'André Téchiné (Écoutez Le Cinéma! 2004)
We conclude with a double-bill of r ‘n’ b tracks that heavily influenced many artists of the 60s, including The Beatles (“I Feel Fine”) and Led Zeppelin (“Moby Dick”). First, Bobby Parker, with Watch Your Step (V-Tone 7" 1961),then we finish with Ray Charles and What'd I Say (Atlantic 7" 1959). Early rock music doesn’t get better than this. Until next week …
